On March 27th
& 28th, 2004
Congratulations to all winners of the Manitoba Open 2004 !
These Provincial Championships are
for the National and the Provincial
level 4 streams .
Level 4 gymnasts can earn a spot
for Western Canada Championships while National Stream
gymnasts can earn a spot for both
Western and National Championships.
All 4 of Manitoba’s High
Performance athletes automatically received a spot on the “Open” team for
Westerns
which left only 3 spots open for
the National “Open” gymnasts who were competing that day.
As always Panthers had the largest
contingent of gymnasts participating.
This is a brief overview of
Panthers gymnasts results:
Jholeen Ponce had a remarkable come back from her knee surgery last
year. This was her first competition
since November 2002. This was her
5th win at the Manitoba Open.
Michelle Dewyn was a very close second (.05) to Jholeen. Nice Bars as
always !
Stephanie Monkman started the competition super strong with her top notch vault - a nice Luconi Pike !
but had some difficulties on her
last event and ended up 3rd
AA.

In the National Novice Category,
Panthers’ Jhonaleen Ponce did only 3 events because she was recovering
from shoulder tendonitis. It was her first ever competition. She came
first on Vault and Floor.
In the High Performance stream
we had Ashlee deLeeuw in Senior and Alexandra Regier in Junior.
Their goal for this meet - trying
out new difficulties in preparation for the National Championships.
Ashlee tried her new vault
successfully - nice Luconi Pike.
She also tried a double Arabian.
She warmed it up extremely well but in competition… she fell on it.
On Bars, she successfully added
her new dismount - Toe on ˝ turn to double front salto.
Nice start value ! Keep those toes pointed !
Alex competed her stalder 1/1 turn
on bars for the first time. Great !
In the Provincial stream
category:
Lindsay Mirecki, took first place all around in her first attempt in the
level 4 category. Excellent !
Also in the same situation, Jade
Griffiths did quite well, especially on Floor. Beautiful artistry !
In preparation for next year, Keeley
Edwards had a very good competition.
It was also her first attempt in
this category..

Since there were no more spots
available in the National Open Category for the Western Championships,
Robyn Smith had to compete on the second day to gain a spot on the
Provincial Open Team.
A few other competitors had to do
the same as well.
Robyn dominated the Provincial 4
Open, hitting 4 for 4 and a personal best All Around score !
Oh ! One more thing…she competed
while being sick ! Robyn, you are a tough cookie !!!
