Well we are right in the middle of it! The gymnastics season that is. The recreational programs are well underway, and the competitive season is just gearing up. Five Panthers made the 7 member female team representing Manitoba at the Canada Games in Bathurst, New Brunswick Feb 28th, - Mar 9th. Manitoba went mining in New Brunswick and came back with bronze and silver. Team Manitoba received the bronze medal on day one for the TEAM competition, a first ever in artistic gymnastics, and on the third day of competition our very own Ashlee deLeeuw brought home the silver on balance beam. Great job everyone.
As you know, Panthers relies heavily on its membership for fundraising, but did you know we have excellent Corporate sponsorship programs as well, which offer wonder advertising opportunities. Most of you have seen the different corporate logos in past newsletters, signs in the gym, as well as the embroidered "Frontier Toyota" logo on our track suites. We also offer many other opportunities. Whether you’re business is big or small we have something for you. Please feel free to contact me regarding these exciting packages.
A Special
Thank you
I would like to thank Quest Musique at 161 Provencher Boulevard, for the recent donation of a Karaoke machine and teen music package. This karaoke machine will be used to play music and make announcements at functions and displays outside the Club. It can also be used for Birthday Parties, if available.
I would also like to thank Bessie's Indian Craft Supplies located at Arlington & Redwood for their generous donation of craft supplies for our "Spring Break Camp".
Competitive
Congratulations to Ashlee deLeeuw. She competed very well at Elite Canada in early December.
Elite Canada is an annual selection meet hosted by Gymnastics Canada whose purpose is to identify the top Canadian gymnasts and awarding them the status of High Performance. Despite some difficulties Ashlee was able to finish 14th all around and 6th on Beam. She is now the only High Performance Senior in the Province and one of the best gymnasts in Canada. To get to Elite Canada she had to go through a screening process a month earlier hosted by Panthers.
In January Panthers hosted the NCCP level 2 technical clinic on behalf of the MGA. Three of our coaches passed the course successfully. Congratulations Victoria Robson, Alyssa Rajotte and Leah Dlot ! Helene and Robert conducted the course. Krista Carter is also a course conductor for Manitoba and she has already given a few Level 1 courses in the Province. NCCP stand for National Coaching Certification Program. The highest certification for coaches is Level 4, which is very difficult to achieve with high requirements. Both Panthers head coaches have had their Level 4 certification for many years now.
Some of our Provincial Gymnasts competed at the
Springers competition where they had very good results. Congratulations. The
results will soon be posted on our web site.
Panthers hosted the trials for the Canada Games. Ashlee deLeeuw won the meet with an impressive score of 36.15 and will participate in the Games for the second time. Last time she was a finalist on Beam where she finished 5th. This year she won silver on beam. Five of the seven Manitoba team members who brought home the bronze medal are from Panthers including Stephanie Monkman, Alexandra Regier, Stephanie Friesen and Nicole Mulder. The whole story (as it happened) is posted on our web site page: http://www.panthersgymnastics.ca/cg2003bt.htm .
Congratulations also go out to our gymnasts who participated at the Aerials Competition. The results will be posted shortly on the web site.
Panthers will again be co-hosting with the MGA, the
2003 Manitoba Open Championships and our Toyota Invitational during the last
weekend of March. We will need a lot of volunteer help for these competitions.
Our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Mrs. Roy, will post a list in the lobby. This is
another excellent opportunity to get few more hours off you Volunteer
assessment.
Congratulations to Helene Desmarais, who just
received confirmation of her new Status as a National 2 Judge. This designation
will permit her to Judge at Nationals. Though she has gone to 13 Nationals as a
coach, it will be her first experience in next May as a Judge. She is also a
2003 Nominee for the Manitoba High Performance Coach of the year… Good luck…We
will know if she wins in mid April !

Recreation
We have a very exciting Spring Break Camp planned for this year. We will have crafts, games, puzzles, activities and, of course, gymnastics – all based on such themes as The Amazing Race, Circus Day, Panthers Pirate Survivor and Hollywood Popstars. We saw many new faces from the birthday parties this year. And what a success! The parties are booked up until June.
The Regional Recreational Championships will be held April 4-6 at Springers Gymnastics Club and many of our Gym 4’s are going this year. Good luck to all the gymnasts attending from Panthers.
A Little Poetry…Is good for the club

Since
Since our coaches
know every gymnast
Each smiling face that comes
through the door
We need no other clue of
your existence
Like those wet slushy boots
on the floor
Please place all outer
footwear in the cubby and shelf space provided in the entrance to the club

Recipes
for Success
Shared Secrets of Panthers Gymnastics, a book full of delicious recipes donated by Panthers alumni, are still available for purchase at $8 each. They make a great gift and what a way to support the club. We’ve included a great recipe just in time for Easter. Happy cooking!

Easter Buns
1 pkg. yeast (add sugar and 2 c. lukewarm water
water as directed on pkg.) Pinch
salt
1 c. sugar ½
- 1 c. currants
1 c. melted shortening Flour (approx. 10 c.)
Mix sugar, melted shortening, water, salt and currants together. When yeast has proofed, add flour, alternating with liquid. Knead. Let rise to double size; punch down and let rise for another ¾ hour. Turn dough on to a floured board. Shape into small buns. Let them rise again. Bake at 375º for 15-20 minutes.
Why I Love Gymnastics
I love gymnastics because it keeps me fit, well disciplined and teaches me to have time management. My favourite events are floor and vault. I like floor because I like to do round offs, back handsprings, back tucks and my floor routine. I like vault because it is fun and it took hard work to get good at it.

I had an older daughter who was involved with Panthers for 3 years. Now my younger daughter is also interested in gymnastics. Panthers has a positive atmosphere while creating a fun learning experience for the children. Jennifer Boyce |
Aaron enjoys Panthers Gymnastics very much. He loves running, jumping, climbing and swinging. I am pleased that Panthers provides a safe environment in which to do these things. Cathy Bowen |
|
This is our first year at Panthers. We decided to put our 5-year old girl into Panthers because we knew someone who already went here and we wanted to give her a safe place to learn gymnastics properly. She enjoys coming to each class and has a lot of fun with her teacher, Jodi, and the other kids in her class. Kailey Melna (Terri Melna) |
My daughter loves going to Panthers Gymnastics and on those days that she has to miss, she’s pretty disappointed. Gymnastics provides the flexibility, cardiovascular exercise, stretching and lots and lots of fun that I’m thrilled my daughter can achieve through a sport like gymnastics. She is having so much fun that she doesn’t even realise that the exercise part of it is also good for her! Dana Dangerfield |
